Mario Chiodo has won the competition for a sculpture to be placed in the Frederick Douglass Peace Garden in Boston, MA. His design, titled The Journey of My Soul, is a storytelling sculpture that explores the emotional and transformational memories that propelled Douglass to become the voice of the oppressed: his mother - forced to give him up as a baby, Douglass as a boy secretly learning to read, and Douglass as a young man being brutally beaten by a slave owner. Above them, is the Great Orator, Frederick Douglass, smashing the shackles of slavery beneath his boot, lecturing to expose the inhumanity of slavery.

The Journey of My Soul will be enlarged and installed in 2014.

The passionate sculpture honoring the lives of the African American refugees seeking freedom has been completed and installed in Alexandria, VA. The dedication has a tentative date of March 8, 2014.  Read Full Story Here
